Teacher Feature - Meet Olena

I'll be teaching math for 6 to 10 year olds at Different Directions this year (we meet from 2 to 3:30 on Mondays.) I'm really looking forward to the class! Math has been my passion my entire life, I love sharing my enthusiasm for it with others. We'll approach math playfully and as a way of thinking about the world . . . not as the drudgery it often turns into at school!

A bit about our trajectory: I'm the mom of Miriam, 11, and Becky, 7, and I've been homeschooling the kids since Miriam was in Grade 1. We found Different Directions the very first year we started homeschooling and have always loved the sense of community at DD. Thank you, Tinamarie, for keeping this place going despite the many challenges of the last few years!!

As for me, I'm an unabashed math nerd and proud of it! I was a math contest kid in high school, representing Canada at the International Math Olympiad way back in 2002 and 2003, I continued on this path by getting a math degree in college and then a math PhD at Stanford. I've always loved teaching and get true joy out of communicating ideas to kids.

Hope to see your kids in my class at DD!
