We will be taking a look at how various cultures used stories as cautionary tales, to explain the unexplainable, our relation to the world/nature and to pass down ancestral knowledge. There will be weekly readings, writing assignments and group activities consisting of the occasional drama/craft activity to support the text. Class objectives include but are not limited to determining a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments; to contribute ideas and accept and incorporate the ideas of others; develop and strengthen writing; to analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).
