We will be taking a look at how various cultures used stories as cautionary tales, to explain the unexplainable and to explain our relation to the world/nature. We will carry over our new genre-detective skills into five graphic novels, each paired with the folktale or folk tradition that inspired it, before closing with a bonus novel rooted in Greek mythology. Class objectives include but are not limited to determining a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments; to contribute ideas and accept and incorporate the ideas of others; develop and strengthen writing; to analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).
