Why are some people able to digest dairy and others cannot? How do viruses infect cells? How do your white blood cells recognize bacteria as foreign and attack them? What are mountain lions in Colorado different from those native to Florida? To answer these and other questions, join me through inquiry based investigations to discover the world of biology* We will have interactive discussions and slideshows, assigned readings and videos, homework and quizzes to reinforce learning as well as laboratory exercises both hands on and simulated. Students will make predictions, design a plan to collect experimental data with the appropriate controls, analyze the resulting data employing mathematical formulas and graphical representations, conceive and justify their explanations of the evidence, and then communicate their work. Homework, quizzes, exams and lab reports will be assigned and reviewed. To get the most out of the course, completing homework assignments is essential. However, work is not coerced; rather students with their families are encouraged to set their own goals. The only requirement is that we maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect for all. Learning differences can be accommodated. *This course is intended to be a prerequisite for AP Biology. However, if you plan to take the 2026 AP exam, homework assignments can be adjusted to meet your needs. Moreover, although the course is designed for high schoolers, mature middle schoolers are welcome.
