Students move from Dada's 1916 origins in Zurich through parallel, often independently developed, mid-century movements in Japan and Brazil, into the body- and identity-centered work of the 1970s across the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East, and finally into contemporary global practice. Learning goals include: to explain performance art as a medium distinct from painting, sculpture and theater; to trace a global lineage of proformance art from 1916 to now; to analyze how historical context (war, feminism, civil rights, decolonization and migration) shape artistic choices; to devise, rehearse, and perform original short pieces while critiquing peers' work with clarity and respect.
