HEART OF LANGUAGE

Ages 7 - 11

12:30 -2:00

An inspiring class to get your child thinking about language more deeply. Based on Charlotte Mason and Classical education, true one-room-schoolhouse style, multi-level and ability, with multi-year content. Friendly to beginning, emerging and adept readers. Self-paced Italic handwriting, practical English grammar, Latin & Greek roots, memory work using famous poetry, copywork & dictation, narration as comprehension and composition tool. Class is flipped. The “homework” is in class, and stays there, and the “work” happens in the wild. There will be no assignments, only suggestions.

This year we will be giving special focus to proper use of personal pronouns, and delve into how language roots and grammar are essential for study of law, medicine, botany, anatomy, philosophy, etc. We will also dip into Shakespeare so the foundation for great literature is broadened. Students will need to order class materials, details will be emailed after registration is completed.

This class will be offered online and on site when we can return to DD campus

LEGO ROBOTICS

Ages 6-10

3:45 - 4:30

Engineering, Design & Construction

The online class engages in a weekly Robot Talk in which students present a specific model they built using supplies and design instructions the class provides them, or show and tell about the assigned model they constructed applying their unique design while using their own Lego pieces or other materials.

Focusing the lessons through the Engineer's Process, students are introduced to concepts and enhance their knowledge of physics, technology, mechanics, architecture, design, data analysis and visualization and problem solving.

Students get to thoroughly enjoy brainstorming and discussing ways of applying concepts for building models of real-world devices such as helicopters, cars, boats, blenders, and other appliances, farm, ranch, and construction site apparatuses, and much more.

PLAYING WITH

SHAKESPEARE

Ages 12-18

10:00 - 12:00

This hands-on class will focus on the “playing” of scenes from classic plays and poems. Shakespeare will definitely make an appearance this year. It will include acting, literary and communication skills, vocabulary building, history, social skills and laughter all along the way. Games, improvisation, and lots of student input lead to our creations.  Each semester new material will be explored; so new and returning students will find a fresh class.  There may be some imaginative assignments for students to do between sessions - optional to respect the differing philosophies in your home schooling.

This Spring we will be playing and working together remotely with humor and depth.Everyone will come away with some glorious inspiration from the great Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca and with an introduction to American  poet/playwright/ Edgar Lee Masters. Like you, they also lived in “interesting times”.

All are welcome regardless of experience. We will find a creative way

to share our work at the end of the term.

$35. Drop in fee which will be credited to your tuition.Payment plans are available, flexible, and adjustable. Just ask. These are trying times for most of us!

This class will be offered online and on site when we can return to DD campus.

WRITING FROM

THE HEART

Ages 11-14

2:00 - 3:30

This year we will be writing small, specific assignments in class. Some technical, some creative, our writing projects will be open subjects more focused on style, intention, and conveying information. We will also explore writing both separately and socially.

There will be plenty of support in meeting the demands of assignments, with introduction to clear (self) grading rubrics, peer review, and (optional) group sharing. We will also learn about note taking, older forms of English and influences, and give special attention to punctuation, sentence structure, and creativity within technical specifications for writing. We will break apart words until we can see their roots, and compare similar words for meaning.

Faster pace than the Foundational class, with some same resources. Your child must be a comfortable reader to be in this class. New and emerging writers welcome. This is to be approached as a year-long class. Welcoming both returning students in the age range, and new students, space permitting.

Students will need to order class materials, details will be emailed after registration is completed.

This class will be offered online and on site when we can return to DD campus.
