Writing From the Heart of Language (Intermediate Level)
2:00pm-3:30pm Thursdays Ages 11-14
NEW!!! By Popular Demand!
"My daughter loves your class!" T.P., regarding the foundational level class
Based on Charlotte Mason & Classical education, multi-level and ability. This class is packed with individualized attention. Be inspired while thinking about language more deeply using self-paced Italic handwriting, practical English grammar, Latin & Greek roots, memory work using poetry, dictation (no copywork), and narration as comprehension and composition tool. Students will be introduced to some important styles of writing, and try some themselves.
This year we will be writing small, specific assignments in class. Some technical, some creative, our writing projects will be open subjects more focused on style, intention, and conveying information. We will also explore writing both separately and socially.
There will be plenty of support in meeting the demands of assignments, with introduction to clear (self) grading rubrics, peer review, and (optional) group sharing. We will also learn about note taking, older forms of English and influences, and give special attention to punctuation, sentence structure, and creativity within technical specifications for writing. We will break apart words until we can see their roots, and compare similar words for meaning. A student armed with roots and meanings has clear advantage in many testing situations, and many fields of study: sciences, jurisprudence, and other languages, to name a few.
Faster pace than the Foundational class, with some same resources. Your child must be a comfortable reader to be in this class. New and emerging writers welcome. This is to be approached as a year-long class. Welcoming both returning students in the age range, and new students, space permitting.
Annual AMNH scavenger hunt field trip to be arranged in June doubles as make-up. Field trips may include the NYCHEA Performance fair, or others as opportunities arise.
"My daughter really enjoys Miranda's Language Arts class. She is being challenged to understand words as things that have evolved from the past. I highly recommend this class because it effortlessly helps the students turn English into a history lesson while word usage and spelling and vocabulary are all enhanced." -- M.R., regarding the foundational level class
IMPORTANT: The Foundational level is prerequisite for 9-year-old students to attend the Intermediate level. Returning students, please let me know the status of your current books.
