Physics (practical application class)

10:00am-11:30am Thursdays     Ages 12-16

Kids will be engaged in PhysicsQuest story-based activities and will be solving mysteries while applying physics concepts. This will show them the fun and relevance of science. The class aims not only to expose them to middle school physics concepts, but to give them a positive experience with science! 

Fall Semester:

  • The Search for Einstein’s Hidden Treasure (2005): Students will be introduced to Principles of surface tension; Diffraction of the light; Pendulum motion; Magnetic Field.
  • Ben Franklin’s Secret Message (2006): Students will be introduced to Electric charges; Insulators and Conductors; Conservation of Energy; Light interaction with Lenses. 
  • Marie Currie’s Floating Classes (2007): Students will be introduced to Surface Temperature measurement methods; Motion of Atoms (Science behind cold and hot); Substance changes with temperature; Heat as a form of energy.


Teacher: Ekaterina Machavariani

Ekaterina (Elena's mom) holds a Master's degree in Mathematics from NYU-Courant Institute. When in high school she participated in national and international mathematics competitions and has a gold medal from international math project competition. Following graduate school she has been tutoring students all around NYC. Besides her love for math and sciences, she also loves to read about nutrition and is an avid cook herself. She finds joy in non-toxic and environmentally friendly ways of living.
