Heart of Math

10:00am-11:30am Thursdays     Ages 5-7

Using games, songs, stories, and manipulatives, we will take a well-rounded approach to the year and keep the environment tender and learner-friendly. Multiple learning styles are used to reach students where and how they learn. Friendly to multiple levels and learning differences. We will have a time for healthy snacks. We will keep a nice balance between formal lessons, guided, and free (math-inspired) play.

We will explore:

• all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) • odds & evens • number familiarity: visual recognition & written • number lines • shapes • tangrams • skip counting • math in nature & Fibonacci numbers • calendars • patterns • matrix games • read-alouds • concrete before abstract • active and engaged learning • field trips • socially using math language • using visual, auditory, kinetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and emotional styles of learning • drawing and writing numbers & concepts • exposure to the places math can take us • bringing back the romance and satisfaction of Big Math as a place of exploration intersecting with science, art, and philosophy! Woo!

Please pay in advance of the second class. $50 non-refundable deposit per child, per term. This is to be approached as a year-long class.
