Heart of Language

12:30pm-2:00pm Thursdays     Ages 7-11

"We absolutely ADORED your class last year and can't wait to continue!" R.R.

An inspiring class to get your child thinking about language more deeply. Based on Charlotte Mason and Classical education, true one-room-schoolhouse style, multi-level and ability, with multi-year content. Many students return for all three years. Friendly to beginning, emerging and adept readers. Self-paced Italic handwriting, practical English grammar, Latin & Greek roots, memory work using famous poetry, copywork & dictation, narration as comprehension and composition tool. Class is flipped. The “homework” is in class, and stays there, and the “work” happens in the wild. There will be no assignments, only suggestions. This is to be approached as a year-long class. New students welcome, space permitting.

As one mother replied, “This class continues to be a tremendous blessing for my daughter! I now see why she's been taking the book from me so she can be the one to read aloud part of the bedtime story.” L.B.

This year we will be giving special focus to proper use of personal pronouns, and delve into how language roots and grammar are essential for study of law, medicine, botany, anatomy, philosophy, etc. We will also dip into Shakespeare so the foundation for great literature is broadened. We will continue to break apart words until we can see their roots, and compare similar words for meaning. This is helpful in all study, and for the language portions of standardized tests.

Annual AMNH scavenger hunt field trip is last class, doubles as make-up. Field trips may include the NYCHEA Performance fair, or others as opportunities arise.

"Thought you would like to see your influence...my son is sitting and reading his favorite book of poetry after breakfast." K.S.

IMPORTANT: The Foundational level is prerequisite for 9-year-old students to attend the Intermediate level. Returning students, please let me know the status of your current books. If you need new, let me know asap. New students need to be placed for books via email (by enrollment inquiry below). Ideally all books are ordered by Miranda by 4 Sept.  Please pay in advance of the second class. $50 non-refundable deposit per child, per term.
