Food Explorers

Ages 9-13

fall term: 2:00pm-4:00pm Fridays

winter & spring terms: 3:00pm-5:00pm Fridays

Each week students will prepare and taste a recipe; work with different flavors, aromas and textures; learn to describe the experience of eating; learn the role of physics and chemistry in cooking; learn the nutritive value of foods and impacts on the body; read and understand food labels and principles of healthy eating using MyPlate; cooking safety and prevention of food borne illness; food and culture; where ingredients are produced; environmental impact of food production; how to adjust a recipe's quantity and ingredients; meal planning and budgeting; and so much more! 

Teacher: Loribeth Marshall

Loribeth loves teaching and has been an active member of the NYC homeschool community since her now teenage daughter was four years old. Loribeth has taught several homeschool classes over the years including Writer's Quest, Artist Quest, STEAM Team, Playing with Art and Physics, and Playing with History. She has an A.S. degree in dietetics from LaGuardia Community College and is pursuing a B.S. degree in nutrition and dietetics from Queens College. She has led nutrition workshops for kids and adults at the Early Childhood Learning Center and Quality Services for the Autistic Community at LaGuardia College; and provided nutrition education and cooking demonstrations through City Harvest, Brighter Bites, and Cornell Cooperative Extension Farmers' Market Nutrition Program.
